First Total Knee Replacement Procedure At Champaign Surgery Center at the Fields

9/22/2020

At the end of August, Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Robert Cusick completed the first total knee arthroplasty (replacement) at the Champaign Surgery Center at the Fields. Total Knee Replacements were previously performed in area hospital operating rooms in the Champaign-Urbana area.

The Champaign Surgery Center at the Fields is an ambulatory surgery center – known as an ASC. Total knee arthroplasty became eligible for Medicare payment in the ASC setting in 2020. ASCs provide same-day surgical care and optimize patients’ experience through clinical quality, convenience and cost savings.

“We are excited to offer the Champaign Surgery Center outpatient option to our patients needing a total knee replacement,” said Dr. Cusick. “Considering total knee replacement in an ASC setting offers patients a surgeon controlled environment with lower costs, better scheduling and at home recovery. There are many patients who are good candidates for outpatient joint replacement and who would prefer to avoid an overnight stay in the hospital. We are happy to now offer that option.”
