Genetic Testing Cystic Fibrosis Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) First Trimester Screening and Nuchal Translucency (NT) Quad/Alpha-fetal protein (AFP) Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing Amniocentesis For further information on these tests, please click here. Testing Information Throughout your pregnancy, specific blood and urine tests are recommended. First Trimester At each appointment, a urine sample is requested to check sugar and protein levels. Specimen containers are available at the reception desk. Please give your sample to the medical office assistant before examination. Routine Pregnancy Laboratory Tests CBC (complete blood count):Checks for signs of anemia or infection. Type and Rh:Determines your blood type and Rh factor. RPR (rapid plasma reagin):Screens for syphilis, required by the State of Illinois. HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) Screens for the AIDS virus. Hepatitis B:Screens for liver disease. Rubella titer:Determines your immunity to “three-day measles.” Antibody screen:Determines which antibodies are present in your blood. Drug Screen Urine culture: Infection detection Additional Tests *These tests may be performed if indicated: Urine Specimen: At each appointment, a urine sample is required to check sugar and protein levels. Glucose load (50 grams): Screens for diabetes if at increased risk for diabetes.. Pap smear: Screens for cervical cancer and HPV if over age 30. GC (neisseria gonorrhoeae), chlamydia: Screens for sexually transmitted infections. Cystic fibrosis: Screens for lung and pancreas disease, conducted upon request. (optional test) Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA): Screens for a condition affecting motor nerves that control muscular functioning. Sickle cell Herpes typing TSH: Thyroid disorder Varicella: Determine immunity to Chicken Pox* Additional testing may be ordered at Provider’s discretion. Second Trimester At each appointment, a urine sample is required to check sugar and protein levels. Specimen containers are available at the reception desk. Optional Pregnancy Laboratory Tests AFP/Quad Marker screen (alpha-fetoprotein test) between week 15 and 20: Detects increased risk for neural tube defects and Down syndrome. Third Trimester At each appointment, a urine sample is required to check sugar and protein levels. Specimen containers are available at the reception desk. Please give your sample to the medical office assistant before examination. Recommended Pregnancy Laboratory Tests At approximately 28 weeks, the following tests are ordered. CBC (complete blood count): Detects possible anemia. RPR: Screens for syphilis; required by the State of Illinois. Glucose load (50 grams): Screens for diabetes. Antibody screen: Required for Rh negative patients. Vaginal culture for BETA Strep Group B – This test is ordered at approximately 36 weeks gestation. This screens for Group B Strep, a bacterial infection that can be found in a woman
