GOING UP With Railing Lead with strong or non-operative leg first with your hand on the railing. Place your cane (in the hand opposite of your operative leg) on the step that your good leg is stepping onto. You should move your cane and your good leg to this step at the same time to avoid twisting. Then bring “bad” or operative leg up next. Balance yourself. Continue this pattern until you have reached the top. WITHOUT railing: Step with good leg first. Follow this with operative/bad leg and cane to the step Balance yourself. Continue this until you reach the top. GOING DOWN With Railing You will lean slightly towards railing side and hold on. Place your cane on the step below you. Then step down with your operative leg. Follow this with your non-operative leg to the same step. Balance yourself. Continue this pattern until you reach the bottom. WITHOUT Railing: Place cane on step below you. Place your operative/bad leg below onto step. Then bring good leg to same step that your bad foot is on. Balance yourself. Continue until you reach the bottom.
